A celebration that grew
A party in the Anchers’ garden in 1884 was the starting point, but the painting is not a snapshot. Krøyer worked on it for four years and used photographs as references. Helga Ancher was also painted in later in the process, making her appear older on the canvas than she was at the actual celebration.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Hip, hip, hurrah! Artist's party on Skagen by the famous Danish artist Peder Severin Krøyer (Danish title: Hip hip hurray! Artist's party on Skagen).

The work is from 1888 and depicts the artists' colony the Skagen painters celebrating with raised glasses in hand in a garden. Those pictured are from left and clockwise around the table: Martha Johansen, Viggo Johansen, Christian Krohg, PS Krøyer, Degn Brøndum, Michael Ancher, Oscar Björck, Thorvald Niss, Helene Christensen, Anna Ancher and Helga Ancher.

Peder was born in Stavanger to Norwegian parents but grew up as a foster son in Denmark with his sister and Danish brother-in-law Krøyer, whose surname he came to adopt. Peder developed into one of Scandinavia's foremost painters.

Artist: Peder Severin Krøyer | Created: 1888.
