The original watercolour for August spent decades in a bank safe-deposit box belonging to the Beskow family. It was not shown publicly until it was sold at Stockholms Auktionsverk in 2019 – a reminder that a familiar image of a month had long been a hidden original.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow from Saga of the year in 1927 with the motif August.

Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: Now the harvest is yellowing in the fields and meadows and longing to be salvaged at the lodge. Now the cucumber is turning white in the garden bed, and the berries are ripe in the forest. Mrs. Vinbär sends a message with the thrush to the harvest festival in her cabin, and the message is carried in clear sounds that trill beautifully and thrum. When the thrushes drill to the forest now, then suddenly in every tuft among the cloudberries, blueberries and lingonberries are small and raspberries sweet and sweet.

Mrs Rönnnbär rushes so red and happy to hang a string of pearls around her neck, little junipers trundle so cheerfully to make it early to the waltz. And guests come in thousands, millions, trillions and more. "Oh alas, they won't fit in my hall and more are still coming!" "What shall I do, poor wife who has received millions of guests?" — "Yes, yes," said the magpie, "that's how you do when wild berries are invited to parties!"

The melon burst into a violent laugh. He broke, and no one can fix it. But the berries took hold of the long dance, and that's the end of the story.

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is probably one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
