When the Illusion Became Widely Distributed
The source caused such a sensation at the 1886 industrial exhibition in Cincinnati that a policeman had to keep curious visitors at a distance. The following year, the buyer Frank Tuchfarber had the motif distributed as a chromolithograph – an advanced colour-printing technique that made Harnett’s visual deception an image for far more homes than a single original could reach.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring an impressive lifelike painting by 19th century Irish-American artist William Harnett. The painting is a so-called still life, a motif category within paintings and photographs that only depict objects.

Harnett was the most imitated and accomplished still life artist in 19th century America. His work constantly challenged how realistic a painting could be, an area of ​​painting known as trompe l'œil - French for tricking the eye. The motif has a fantastic depth and a wealth of detail.
