A Calendar to Read
The illustration was originally a page in Elsa Beskow’s picture book Årets saga from 1927. Each month was given both its own image and a rhymed verse, so the book functioned as a year calendar to be read aloud—rather than simply as a collection of storybook pictures.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow. The illustration was published in Saga of the year in 1927 and named February.

Årets Saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: January starts the year, February comes next, March, April has a bud in the hair. May and June bloom the most. July, August and September are rich and glorious, but October and November and December are gray

The motif shows three happy children sledding in a snowy winter landscape.

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
