A Photograph from the Studio
This was not a newspaper image but a Paramount photograph taken to promote Shanghai Express. The film received three Academy Award nominations, and Lee Garmes won for cinematography. The still was taken by Don English – an example of how Hollywood publicity images were created alongside the lavish film production.

The story behind the motif

Iconic actress Marlene Dietrich in the hit film Shanghai Express in 1932. Born in Germany, Marlene quickly became a successful actress, singer and cabaret performer. Marlene had a wonderfully hoarse singing voice. Her revolutionary confident style combined femme fatale elegance and dramatic glamour.

Even today, she is a role model for women who want to follow their own unique style. Marlene often experimented with menswear and created a trend that is still popular in the fashion world. Her thin, iconic eyebrows are still a source of inspiration in the beauty industry today.

Photographer: Don English | Created: about 1932.
