The story behind the motif
Mary with Child by John Bauer from 1911. Mary with the child is an iconic cover for the magazine Jul and over the years has become the image of a Nordic fairytale atmosphere during changing seasons and holidays.
In the picture we see beautiful Maria lying in the snow with her pink coat on a winter night. Her footprints in the snow testify that she has been out hiking to finally lie down and rest. She holds her child in her arms and in the sky we see a shower of stars which, on closer inspection, turn out to be angels coming down to watch over her.
John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
