A Garden on Lease
The garden was a project Monet negotiated for himself. When he rented the house in Vétheuil, he obtained the owner’s permission to shape the terraces down toward the Seine, and his large porcelain vessels followed him from home to home. The place was therefore not merely a temporary backdrop, but something he actively created and carried with him.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the beautiful, colorful painting The Artist's Garden at Vétheuil , painted by Claude Monet in 1881.

In the picture we see flowering bushes and sunflowers painted in wonderful colors. A small child stands on a footpath lined with pots. In the background we see a house and on the stairs in front of the house we see another child and an adult who are heading down the aisle.

Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris. In 1862 , Monet applied to Charles Gleyre's studio in Paris, where he met the artists Auguste Renoir, Frederic Bazille and Alfred Sisley. Together they shared a new approach to painting. They painted the effects of light outdoors with broken colors and rapid brushstrokes, the art style that later became known as Impressionism.

Artist: Claude Monet | Created: 1881.
