Blue as New Technology
When the series was advertised ahead of the New Year in 1831, the publisher highlighted Prussian blue, a new pigment on the Japanese market. Analyses by the Metropolitan show that the printers also applied the pigment over indigo in two stages – a technical device that gave the print its unusually deep blue tones.

The story behind the motif

Under the waves off Kanagawa is a famous woodcut by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese title: Kanagawa oki nami ura).

The work is a traditional Japanese Ukyio-e style illustration of extreme waves bearing down on three fragile boats on the Pacific Ocean off the Japanese main island of Honshu with Mount Fuji in the background. The wave probably represents a monster wave "okinami". The boats pictured are transporting fish from the southern islands to Edo.

Artist: Katsushika Hokusai | Created: about 1832.
