An Idea in Four Versions
Redon returned to the same enigmatic idea in four closely related charcoal drawings during the final decade of the 1890s. Its meaning has never been fixed: the image has been interpreted both as an expression of fear of female sexuality and as a symbol of fertility.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Armour by the French artist Odilon Redon from 1891. The motif shows a woman in black armor.

Odilon's real name was Bertrand and he came from Bordeaux, France. As an artist, he is known for his imaginative dreamscapes. He was interested in the reality of fantasy and tried to embody the feelings and dreams he experienced. The result was a strong mix of delightful and slightly more terrifying subjects. His works have inspired Edvard Munch, Fernand Khnopff and Jan Toorop, among others.

Artist: Odilon Ready | Created: 1891.
