The sheet was part of Momoyogusa, a suite in three woodblock-printed albums. The images were first sent out individually to subscribers to the series, but were later published together in book form for a wider audience. Kamisaka Sekka drew his visual ideas from the Rinpa tradition, while many of the series’ subjects dated back to the ninth and tenth centuries.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Willow and Cherry by the Japanese artist Kamisaka Sekka. The motif was created in 1909–10 and forms part of Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, also known as Momoyogusa, a series first distributed sheet by sheet and later published as illustrated albums.

Sekka revitalized the decorative Rinpa tradition for a modern audience. In the image, the willow’s long leaves and the cherry tree’s pale blossoms fall across the warm background in a soft, rhythmic movement. The original is a color woodblock print in which gold and silver are used to enhance the image’s luminosity and decorative character.

Artist: Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) | Created: 1909–10.
