A winter holiday born from a wager
The poster dates from 1920, when St. Moritz had already built its winter identity on a 56-year-old hotel wager. In 1864, hotelier Johannes Badrutt promised British summer guests compensation if they did not enjoy the snow. They stayed through the winter – and the resort’s winter tourism took off.

The story behind the motif

Poster advertising the exclusive Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland by artist Emil Cardinaux in the 1920s. 

St. Moritz is one of the world's most exclusive and popular ski resorts. The Palace Hotel is today an iconic landmark in St. Moritz, known for its luxury and for being part of the exclusive social scene. The stylish and artistic poster is a good example of how during this period posters were used to sell a dream of luxury travel destinations and experiences.
