The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Songbird and Lotus by the Japanese printmaker Ohara Koson, dated to the period 1900–1936. Koson is especially associated with Japanese bird-and-flower imagery, in which careful observations of nature are combined with a pared-down and decorative composition.
The motif depicts a small songbird perched on the stem of a large green lotus leaf. Above the bird, pink lotus blossoms are visible, while water runs from the edge of the leaf. The original is a colour woodblock print in which the bird’s delicate silhouette contrasts with the plant’s large, soft forms.
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877–1945) | Date: 1900–1936.
