The story behind the motif
Ocke, Nutta and Pillerill is a children's book and rhyming tale by Elsa Beskow from 1939.
The book is about the two acorn children Ocke and Pillerill who one day suddenly blow away on a leaf. Their friend, the hazel girl Nutta, sets off together with the kind squirrel to look for her missing friends. On the adventure we encounter elves and goblins, as well as other funny characters such as a teasing magpie and two resourceful chestnut boys.
In this illustration, we see Ocke and Pillerill playing and swinging by their home, with their mother Fru Ollon standing and washing next to them. Next to it is the text:
Mrs. Ollon with her Ocke and little Pillerill,
they lived in a cabin that rarely stayed still,
for the cabin sat and swayed in the high top of the oak,
and it took at least an hour to climb all the way up.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
