From one-colour print to variations
The first edition was printed in 1875 in just one colour, even though William Morris had already incorporated a richer plant pattern into the design. When the wallpaper became popular, Morris & Company produced several new versions—an early example of how a decorative pattern could evolve in response to public demand.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Larkspur by William Morris, first produced in 1875. The design began as a relatively monochrome foliage pattern that was then filled with small flowers. The dense vegetation creates a soft, almost textile-like expression that makes the motif decorative without any single detail taking over.

William Morris (1834–1896) sought to create everyday objects and interiors in which beauty and craftsmanship held a natural place. His nature-inspired wallpapers became an important part of the Arts and Crafts movement and helped transform attitudes toward decorative design in the late 19th century. Larkspur became popular during Morris's lifetime and was developed in several colourways. The organic, repeated pattern remains easy to use in interior styling and works equally well as a standalone piece or as part of a more maximalist gallery wall.
