The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Kingfisher with Lotus Flower by the Japanese printmaker Ohara Koson, dated to the period 1900–1945. Koson is known for his finely nuanced bird-and-flower compositions, in which the movements of animals and the forms of plants are rendered with great precision.
A kingfisher perches on a curved stem beside a white lotus flower. The elongated composition allows the bird and the plant to follow the same gentle line, while the colors stand out clearly against the calm background. The original is a color woodblock print published by Nishinomiya Yosaku.
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877–1945) | Date: 1900–1945.
