Flight Like Swimming
Quinby’s 1872 patent was intended to be powered by the body itself: the hands would raise the wings, while the feet pulled them down. The inventor described the movements as natural, like swimming in water, and expected the entire apparatus to weigh no more than about seven kilos.

The story behind the motif

Poster of a patent drawing dated October 8, 1872 for a "Flying Apparatus" designed by W.F. Quinby.

The drawing illustrates a flight device attached to a person, designed to enable human flight. The device consists of a network of ropes and braces that connect a frame with wing-like structures around the person's arms and torso.

The patent highlights Quinby's attempt to create a human flight device, inspired by nature and similar to the early experiments with gliding.
