An Almanac for a Mass Movement
In 1888, when more than 50,000 people left Sweden, the American Emigrant Company published this Swedish-language almanac in New York. The company was more than a ticket agency: it sold land and helped emigrants establish themselves in the United States, with offices in both New York and Gothenburg.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an Emigrant Almanac in Swedish, printed in 1888 in New York. On the unique record we can see the text: "Almanac published by the American Emigrant Company".

The newspaper's target group was the Swedish Americans and was published every Wednesday, all year round. A year's subscription cost $2.25.

Each issue contained a rich selection of news from Sweden, the week's news in America and other parts of the world. Well-written leading articles on contemporary issues, and a well-run humor department.
