A view from an obsolete mast
The photographer stood at one of Stockholm’s short-lived technological viewpoints. The Telephone Tower was built in 1887, when the lines were strung across the rooftops; by the beginning of the twentieth century, most had been moved underground. The tower remained a landmark until 1953, even though its original purpose had disappeared.

The story behind the motif

View of Stockholm from the old telephone tower (1887-1953). The telephone tower carried telephone lines to all of Stockholm's telephone subscribers and was about 45 m high. In the picture we see the castle and directly to the left the Royal Opera House. In the background, in the haze, lies Södermalm.
