King Winter’s Christmas Workshop
King Winter’s castle is also a small Christmas workshop. In Elsa Beskow’s tale, skis, sledges and ice skates are made there at the last minute, because Swedish children are waiting for them as Christmas presents – a storybook world where winter play is literally a craft.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration from Elsa Beskow's saga Olle's ski trip which was published for the first time in 1907.

Olle has received a pair of skis as a Christmas present and sets out on his first skiing trip in the forest. In the forest, he meets Uncle Rimfrost, who takes him on an adventure through winter's enchanted landscape. In this motif, we see Olle playing snowball fights with other children who are Inuit.

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
