The Dress Lives On
The dress in the watercolour was not studio clothing but a garment Karin Larsson had designed herself. She made the family’s clothes with freedom of movement in mind, ahead of corseted fashion, and that striped model has enjoyed a long afterlife: the guides at Carl Larsson-gården still wear it.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Under the Birches by Carl Larsson from the year 1902. 

Carl Larsson's art is characterized by depictions of the Swedish landscape and everyday life. During his era, it was common for artists to draw inspiration from National Romanticism, a movement that celebrated the national heritage, landscape and folk culture. Larsson was part of the Scandinavian group of artists who strove to portray Swedish culture and nature in their works during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
