When the Home Went into Print
It was not only visitors to Sundborn who got to see Lilla Hyttnäs. Carl Larsson’s series Ett hem was published in 1899, spreading its interiors far beyond Dalarna. Printing transformed the family’s everyday surroundings into a public pictorial project and helped make the home internationally known – long before it became an obvious reference point for Swedish design.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Veranda, Out of Home (26 watercolors) by Carl Larsson from 1898.

The picture represents the Larssons' home and above the door is the text "Welcome, dear, to Carl Larsson and his wife".

In the home of Karin and Carl Larsson, new design language was combined with old tradition. The couple moved to their house in Lilla Hyttnäs in 1889 and began to create the interior style that would make the home famous. Carl's wife Karin designed their furniture and textiles, among other things.

Their interior design style was a carefully thought out country simplicity with influences from both Britain and Japan.

Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life.
