When the Church Became Larsson’s Studio
In 1905, Carl Larsson returned to Sundborn Church, this time to paint and decorate the church interior itself. The watercolour belongs to the series Ett hem, the 26 images that in 1899 turned the family’s private Sundborn into a Swedish ideal of home decoration.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Sundborn's old church by the Swedish artist Carl Larsson. Sundborn's old church, located in the village of Sundborn in Dalarna, is one of the region's oldest buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Its historical value has inspired many artists.

The church's simple and traditional architecture is typical of many valley churches. It holds a significant place in both local and national cultural history and has been a central location for religious ceremonies for centuries.
