A Christmas picture for children
As early as 1895, the watercolour reached an audience far beyond the Larsson home: it was printed in Jultomten, the children’s magazine of the Swedish National Association of Elementary School Teachers. The image thus became part of an early effort to bring art to children in everyday life – the publisher also built a collection of around 1,500 original works for teaching.

The story behind the motif

The motif depicts a peaceful scene where Larsson's family enjoys the peaceful Christmas morning at home in Sundborn. With the masterful precision of watercolour, he captures the light, the warmth and the traditional Swedish Christmas decorations that create a feeling of calm and harmony. The painting is not only an artistic treasure but also a timeless document of Swedish culture and family life during the late 19th century. A perfect detail to add history and charm to your home.
