The visual world around Lilla Hyttnäs was not Carl Larsson’s work alone. Karin Larsson designed furniture, textiles and colour schemes, while Carl made the watercolours; when the book Ett hem was published in 1899, their private home became a new ideal for Swedish interiors and family life.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the summery watercolor painting A good bathing place by Carl Larsson from the year 1896.  The work was published as part of "Ur Ett hem (26 watercolors)" in 1899. 

The painting captures a summer day by a lake in Dalarna where a group of children are swimming and playing. The background shows a picturesque countryside with red cottages and trees, which gives a feeling of tranquility in the Swedish nature. 

Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time. He is known for his bright and harmonious watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life and depict simple everyday life.
