From Opposition to the World’s Fair
The watercolour was bought by the wholesaler Herman Friedländer when it was shown at the Opponent Exhibition in Stockholm in 1885—the artists’ much-discussed protest against the conservative ideals of the Royal Academy. Four years later, it was lent from his collection to the world’s fair in Paris, where it was exhibited in 1889.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Vine from 1884 by Carl Larsson (English title: The Vine).

The wine is painted in the Neo-Rococo style and has been described as a story about and a symbol of love. The woman in the picture harvests grapes that become the wine that the man gets drunk on. She wears a beautiful yellow dress and stands among white roses and vines.

Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life.
