When botany was a practical handbook
In 1900, the fig found a place in French pharmacist Paul Hariot’s colour-printed atlas of medicinal plants. The book contained 144 plates and 221 pages of text, designed to combine recognition in the field with knowledge of how plants were used in folk medicine. The image was therefore as much a practical tool as an illustration.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage illustration of Fig from the early 20th century. The fig tree, scientifically known as Ficus carica, is a deciduous fruit tree that can grow up to 10 meters tall. Its characteristic large, hand-shaped leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers that develop inside a cup-shaped fruit called a syconium are typical features.
