A Fishing Trip as Inspiration
A fishing trip in the Porvoo archipelago gave Edelfelt the idea for the painting. In the summer of 1880, he used the ten-year-old girl next door, Fia Salenius, and the local fisherman Lindström as models; after studies and sketches, the large painting was completed in 1883 and shown at the Paris Salon the following year.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the beautiful painting At Sea by Albert Edelfelt from 1883. The painting depicts a young girl and a man sailing on a stormy sea.

Albert Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish painter and illustrator. As a 19-year-old, Edelfelt went to Antwerp in 1873 to study history painting. He then continued his painting studies in Paris, where in 1800 he received, among other things, a medal for the painting Ett barns likfärd (1879).
