Närke’s coat of arms was carried in the procession at Gustav Vasa’s funeral in 1560—and has not changed since. A nineteenth-century image thus depicts a symbol rooted in the royal mourning ceremony of the Vasa era, rather than a later Romantic invention.

The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with it heraldic coat of arms for the province of Närke from the 19th century. The coat of arms is red and contains two crossed arrows and four black roses.

The text above the weapon reads Nerike's Arms. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."

Närke's largest cities are Örebro, Kumla, Hallsberg, Askersund. The landscape has a long history of ironworks and industrial history and is known for its beautiful nature reserves. Historically, Närke was also known for folk beliefs and stories about black arts (sorcery and magic). During the Middle Ages, the landscape was associated with mystical stories, which contributed to its mythology.
