The King’s Horse Gallery
In 1673, Charles XI had five favourite horses portrayed life-size—the beginning of a royal horse gallery that probably grew to more than twenty portraits. It was more than a private interest: in the 17th century, noble horses were princely status symbols and coveted gifts between courts.

The story behind the motif

This poster features a striking 1673 painting by the esteemed Swedish nobleman and artist David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, often hailed as the father of Swedish painting.

Renowned for his belief that "Art presents riddles that could not be solved by everyone," Ehrenstrahl's work here is a captivating portrait of Karl XI's cherished warhorse, the Blue Tiger. This piece not only showcases Ehrenstrahl's exceptional talent but also captures a significant aspect of Swedish royal history, making it a timeless addition to any collection.

Black collection are selected motifs where we replaced the white passepartout with a black one to highlight the motif in a modern and unique way.

Artist: David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl | Created: 1673.
