The Roadworks Reached the Studio
The photograph looks like a moment from the worksite, but the Midsummer image was taken in a studio while the road between Lima and Rörbäcksnäs was being built from 1901 to 1905. The road workers thus brought the holiday pause into the studio themselves. This makes the image both a staged group portrait and an unusual document of an ongoing road construction project.

The story behind the motif

Five road workers celebrate Midsummer at the turn of the century. The men are dressed for work and sit around a small table with birch ice in the background. The men smoke and toast, some drink straight from the bottle, others from glasses. The road construction went between Lima and Rörbäcksnäs in Dalarna.
