The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Omnibus by the iconic Swedish artist Anders Zorn.
Omnibus an older word for bus. The painting was created in Paris where Zorn regularly traveled by bus from his home in Montmartre, just to study the passengers. As the bus rolled through the city, the light inside was constantly changing. Electric street lamps had recently been installed in Paris - and the mixture of artificial and natural light created new and unexpected effects that Zorn tried to capture on canvas. Contemporary critics described Omnibus as "ultra-modern".
Anders Zorn was a significant artist in Sweden who also became very successful internationally, not least in the USA, where he was hired to paint portraits of presidents, business leaders and society.
