The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Mefisto Consul Dahlander by Anders Zorn from 1884.
According to Zorn himself, he was inspired to paint the subject in the morning after a festive evening in Madrid, where he had traveled from London. His model for the work was the Swedish consul in Valencia, Harald Johan Dahlander. But rather than being a portrait of the consul, the watercolor is a kind of role portrait where Zorn has adopted the consul's appearance to create a demonic expression.
Anders Zorn was a significant artist in Sweden and was also successful internationally, not least in the USA, where he was hired to paint portraits of presidents, business leaders and society.
