The Troll Who Learned to Smelt Iron
Jock was not alone: together with Turing, he goes from Mr Birre’s troublesome neighbour to an unexpected rescuer. When the trolls help free Tinka-Lillfot-Gullhår, they are paid in practical knowledge – Birre teaches them to build houses and smelt iron ore, so they no longer have to eat it raw.

The story behind the motif

Poster with painting by John Bauer depicting a large troll wearing a king's crown. The huddled and mysterious figure looks like a large and forested mountain.

The work is called There was one called Jock and was published in Herr Birre och trollen , a saga by Vilhälm Nordin in Between gnomes and trolls in 1909. Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
