A map for keeping the city in order
In 1772, chamberlain Carl David Gyllenborg copied a city plan that was 22 years old. Its source was city architect Johan Eberhard Carlberg’s project for dividing Stockholm into districts, submitted to the era’s Police and Fire Commission on 9 March 1750. The map was therefore an administrative working tool, not merely a depiction of the city.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old map of Norrmalm, Stockholm from the year 1772.

At the top left we see the text: Charter over Norr Malm. Copy of the city's associated charter. Drawn by the chamberlain count Carl Davis Gyllenborg d. 4 kulii year 1772. Orien. the charter was a project of cap. and city arch. Carlberg to Stockholm's city's tract division which was given by him on March 9, 1750 to then-Congl. Police and Fire Commission.
