When Fram Broke Free
In 1896, the same year the map was drawn, Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen reached Vardø on 13 August after their Arctic journey. On that very day, the expedition ship Fram was also freed from the ice near Svalbard—after three years of the expedition in the Arctic.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old map of the North Pole from 1896. At the top of the picture we see the text: "Overview map of the northern polar regions: prepared in the General Staff Lithographic Institute by Lieutenant H. Byström. " - where we see that the map was made by Lieutenant Herman B yström.

The beautiful map touches, among other things, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and part of Sweden.
