In the upright composition, Asow’s dark hull, masts, and finely wrought rigging rise against the bright waters of the Øresund, while the smaller frigate and small boats lend the image depth and movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEckersberg had studied Russian ships of the line in Copenhagen, borrowed construction drawings from the Danish Navy, and carefully calculated the vessels’ relative placement. The painting is therefore not a depiction of a single observed moment off Helsingør, but a carefully composed marine scene. The clouds, light, and wind were of particular importance to him.
